Cross traders, tanker tycoons and nation builders
Part I
In this article I have sought to gather the ground for understanding the development of the global shipping business after the Napoleonic wars. The industrial revolution and the ensuing adoption of liberal policies contributed demand as well as supply that greatly stimulated world trade; ‘the first Globalization’.
I have tried to see the shipping industry as a part in a wider process, and to follow the subsequent establishment of the framework surrounding the global shipping activities, from inter-governmental requirements such as a uniform signal system for ships in 1867 and a ship measurement system in 1873. The coming of steam brought a major geopolitical change to the world, and steam itself required new competence and organization to make it work.
The second part, from page 16 on, focuses on the Norwegian maritime venture built on timber and wind. The generations that engineered the shipping mobilization of the 1860/70s were largely to see their achievement wither in the 1890s, while a new generation managed the technology leap into steamers. Not a country for organized capitalism; the diverse sources of funding shaped a shipping industry that was to be typical Norwegian: extensive but diverse and fragmented.
